Young Ladies from all over Singapore were, on Friday the 20th of December 2013, taught the basic fundamentals of playing at a one-day Women’s Introduction Clinic by players of the Women’s National team and staff of the Singapore Rugby Union (SRU). Not even wet weather could dampen these ladies spirits as they were eager and willing to give it their all and get involved.
The clinic held at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium, was organised by the SRU to introduce the youngsters to the joys of playing rugby and also to dismiss misconceptions about the sport being violent.
Sceptical about the numbers of participants who would show up due to poor weather, the SRU staff especially the Academy Manager, Muhammad Zaki, was very impressed with the turn-out. Girls as young as fifteen were proving their skills on field and encouraged other newbies with their enthusiasm. Many of the girls attending the clinic had no understanding of rugby itself and had different backgrounds in sports played varying from athletics to water polo and dragon boating to name a few.
The clinic started off with regular rugby warm ups and a few ice breaker games to get the girls opening up to their peers. Moving onto basic ball handling skills of passing and catching and doing this whilst on the move, proved to be a bit difficult in the beginning. There was a lot of improvement as we continued these drills throughout the clinic. Incorporating the most feared part of rugby: tackling, this section bought out the competitive edge in a lot of the girls and everyone enjoyed the physical side of the sport eager to get their partners in the mud.
The overall response indicatedthe girls were keen to develop more on the skills learnt through the clinic and even join local clubs. From these participants, SRU looks forward to hopefully generating a stable U18 squad in which can be a future stepping stone for making the National Women’s 7s and 15s team.
More information with regards to future clinics held within the next couple of weeks will be posted on our Website and Facebook Page. SRU are excited to see the development of Women’s Rugby in Singapore and look forward to meeting new and old players.
