A total of 16 Teams, 240 participants participated in this year’s Standard Chartered Bank Open Tertiary Sevens Tournament held on 24th May 2014 at Yio Chu Kang Stadium. 12 Teams for the Men’s Category and 4 Teams from the Women’s Category.
The tournament comprised of teams from Polytechnics, Institute of Technical Education, Universities and the Standard Chartered National Rugby Academy. Also returning to the tournament was last year Women’s Champion, Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIED), participating in both the Men’s and Women’s.
In the Men’s Category, the format of the group stages were play in 4 groups of 3 teams. At the end of the group stages, Teams ranked 1st after group stages will proceed to the Cup playoff. Teams ranked 2nd after group stages will proceed to the Plate playoffs and Teams ranked 3rd after group stages will proceed to the Bowl playoffs.
In the Women’s Category, all teams will proceed to the Playoffs after group stages, with the 1st ranking team to play the 4th ranking team, and the 2nd ranking team to play the 3th ranking team. And the Winners in the Playoffs will proceed to the Final.
The Men’s Bowl Final was between Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and Republic Polytechnic A (RP A). In a close encounter, TP took the game scoring only 2 tires in the whole game, 12-0.
The Men’s Plate Final was between Singapore Polytechnic A (SP A) and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). SP A proved too strong for NP taking the game 42 nil.
In the Women’s Final Nanyang Technological University (NTU) took on past year’s champs Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIED). HKIED retained the title taking the game 27 to 5.
In the Men’s Cup Final, it was a repeat of last year’s, with Institute of Technical Education A (ITE A) taking on Singapore Barbars (SG BABA, Standard Chartered National Rugby Academy). ITE A provided a close fight, but with the Cup Final being played with 2 halves of 10 minutes, it was SG BABA that out fitted ITE A, taking the game 45-12. But due to SG BABA being a stand-in team and a non-tertiary institute team, the Title was award to ITE A.

Singapore Rugby Union would like to thank all the schools for their participation and support. In addition, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Standard Chartered Bank for making this event possible.
