The Singapore Rugby Union (SRU) has named the Women’s squad that will travel to Korea for the first leg of the Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens Series (ARWSS) 2017 on 23-24th September 2017. Building on their success at the 29th South East Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, the team is aiming for a top six position building on their current ranking as 5th in Asia.

Alvinia Ow Yong led the side to a Silver Medal in Kula Lumpur, and had been named to once again lead the team for this campaign. She has with her the core of the SEA Games squad retained with Ti Tauasosi called up to add valuable experience to a squad that has shown a progressive improvement to date. A good showing by the team in the overall final standings will ensure qualification for Singapore to the 18th Asian Games that will be held in Indonesia in 2018.

Head coach of Singapore Women’s, Wang Shao Ing said, “There hasn’t been much time for a break since SEA Games and kudos to the players who have been essentially going hard since January. But this is what we’ve been working towards and we want to build on the momentum from their SEA Games campaign. The Asian Series is a different proposition from the SEA Games and we haven’t been drawn into the easiest of pools but the team is undaunted and determined to better their showing from last year.”

The Asia Rugby Women’s Sevens Series 2017 is the top rugby sevens competition in Asia organized by Asia Rugby. The tournament consists of two legs this year – Korea (23-24th September) and Sri Lanka (13-14th October). The total points accumulated at the end of both legs will determine Singapore’s new ranking in Asia.

Singapore’s Women are in Pool C with Japan, Thailand and Kazakhstan for the 1st leg.
