• A celebration of Singapore’s National Day and the Singapore Bicentennial Commemoration
• Supporting local rugby at grassroots, club and national level
• A total of 124 golfers
(Singapore, 02 August 2019) From tackles and tries to a great day of teeing off, Singapore Rugby Union (SRU) raises funds in its inaugural Golf Day.
In a day where driving in a flight took over the usual rumbling in the field, SRU hosted a charity golf day at the Orchid Country Club. In line with its motto of supporting national and local development, the event was in conjunction with the celebration of Singapore’s National Day and the Singapore Bicentennial Commemoration. The event’s contributions will be used to aid rugby at grassroots, cover the cost of the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens bid, and at greater sporting levels (such as development and activities for major sports events like the upcoming SEA Games). With SRU’s IPC certified status, donors will enjoy a 2.5x tax incentive.
There were guests and participants from both rugby and non-rugby fraternity at the event. VIPs included members of parliament, Dr Lee Bee Wah and Mr Ang Hin Kee.
Mark Steve, chairman of the organising committee said, “We are most thankful for all those who made this event such a success. Special thanks to our guests, our sponsors and partners, and to all the staff who efficiently organised and executed the event.”
SRU’s newly re-elected president, Terence Khoo passionately stated, “This was a great way to kickstart a new 2-year term. My heartfelt thanks to the community for the tremendous support towards raising funds for rugby development in Singapore. This will help the growth of rugby at grassroots, for club development, and preparation at national levels.
The event also saw meaningful partnerships with various sponsors, and SRU’s general manager, Daniel Marc Chow, commented that, “This is a wonderful event to connect with the corporate community, and we are so thankful for the great support from all around.” He further stated that he was confident his team will do an excellent job of bringing Singapore rugby to the next level.
A total of 124 golfers teed off at the Orchid Country Club, with 140 guests attending the dinner that followed. The evening was enlivened with entertainment and performances by Jack & Rai as well as Leandra Lane, names synonymous with the rugby fraternity in Singapore.
SRU’s head of commercial, Douglas Danapal said, “It was a great event which we put together and we would like to especially thank partners Sportshub, BeIN Sport whom also launched their rugby World Cup screening packages. The community can look forward to at least 1 event each quarter and the SRU annual dinner on the 6th of November.”
